The Chicken Sanctuary
Barnette’s Chicken Sanctuary was founded by me, Sadie Printz, on February 3, 2024. It’s named after Barnette (RIP), a memorable hen with an unknown neurological issue I tried hard to cure. We eventually had to put her down, but she inspired me to start helping other chickens. The sanctuary’s purpose is to rescue hens in need, who are no longer wanted, or can’t be cared for anymore, among other reasons. We’ve already given homes to ten chickens; we now have 13, including the Originals. The healthy birds live together in a large run and coop, and are allowed to free-range on days when I can be outside to watch for hawks. Our quarantine chickens, Pinky the Blind Hen and Gale the “Problem Chicken” (no offense to her), live in a small coop and run temporarily, but will move to a better, permanent place as soon as possible. To read more about the individual residents at the sanctuary (including Pinky and Gale) and hear Barnette’s full story, you can visit the BLOG.
My Writing
The first story I wrote was called “Lost in the Whispering Woods”, about a giraffe named Sam who, as you might have guessed from the title, got lost in the Whispering Woods. Of course I never got that published, but it was pretty much what boosted my love for writing, among other short stories I've written in the last few years. I mostly write adventure/fantasy books with dramatic (I hope) plots and memorable characters. My style changes and improves all the time, and it’s funny to look back on past stories and see how much I’ve changed. Currently, I’m writing the Hidden Gate, an adventure story about a girl and a legend. I’m also starting a fantasy book series called Evie Nightingale, about Evie’s quest for a lost treasure and battle against an evil warlock. Keep an eye out for updates on these books!
