Barnette’s Chicken Sanctuary was founded by me, Sadie Printz, on February 3, 2024. It’s named after Barnette (RIP), a memorable hen with an unknown neurological issue I tried hard to cure. We eventually had to put her down, but she inspired me to start helping other chickens. The sanctuary’s purpose is to rescue hens in need, who are no longer wanted, or can’t be cared for anymore, among other reasons. We’ve already given homes to ten chickens; we now have 13, including the Originals. The healthy birds live together in a large run and coop, and are allowed to free-range on days when I can be outside to watch for hawks. Our quarantine chickens, Pinky the Blind Hen and Gale the “Problem Chicken” (no offense to her), live in a small coop and run temporarily, but will move to a better, permanent place as soon as possible.
